The FISU network

Resource-wise Lappeenranta

Fisu (Finnish Sustainable Communities - Finnish resource-wise municipalities) is a network of pioneering municipalities, whose targets for 2050 are to become carbon neutral and waste-free, as well as institute global sustainable consumption.

The city of Lappeenranta was accepted to participate in the Finnish Innovation Fund SITRA’s resource wisdom work in 2015, along with three other pioneering cities. The aim of FISU activities is to seek and develop means of making Lappeenranta waste-free and carbon-neutral by 2050. The key components of a resource-wise circular economy are citizens’ wellbeing, enhanced energy efficiency and an improved local economy.

In order to achieve these goals, residents, enterprises and the city’s working groups created a common vision and a roadmap towards resource wisdom in 2015. The goals were approached from five different perspectives:

The network is coordinated by the Finnish Environment Institute SYKE and Motiva.
