Gasum

GASUM IS A NORDIC EXPERT ON NATURAL GAS

Gasum, a Nordic energy company and an expert on gas, is building a bridge towards a carbon-neutral society, on land and at sea, together with its partners. Gasum is promoting the creation of a sustainable energy economy by increasing the supply of domestic biogas and evolving the Nordic gas ecosystem.

Gasum imports natural gas to Finland, refines biogas, and supplies the fuels for a wide range of uses in energy production, industry, households, as well as marine and road transport. The company is a leading natural gas supplier and the most significant biogas supplier in Finland.

Gasum produces completely renewable and domestic biogas from biodegradable waste. Biogas is suitable for transportation, for example. Natural gas and liquefied natural gas (LNG), help to significantly reduce emissions arising from energy production, industrial operations and transport.

Biogas

Biogas is a sustainable alternative to traditional fuels

Biogas, a fully domestic and renewable source of energy, is produced according to the principles of circular economy. Societal and industrial waste are among the renewable resources used in biogas production. In Finland, biogas is utilised in heating, electricity production and as fuel. Utilising biogas as fuel reduces Greenhouse Gas emissions by 85% compared to petrol. Gasum’s transport of biogas has been awarded with ‘Joutsenmerkki’ (Nordic Ecolabel) and ‘Avainlippu’ (The Finnish Key Flag symbol) signs for sustainable and domestic work.

Gasum is Finland’s leading biogas provider, and biogas is a key part of the Nordic gas ecosystem. More and more consumers favour sustainably produced solutions, creating a demand for biogas. Gasum’s strategic goal is to stimulate rapid growth in the biogas market, both within and also outside the gas pipeline network.

Natural gas

Natural gas is a bridge to a carbon-neutral Finland

As a fuel, natural gas has versatile features and a wide range of uses. Energy efficient gas burns cleanly: the CO2 emissions generated by the usage of gas are clearly lower compared to oil or coal, and there are no sulphur or tailpipe emissions when burning gas.

Natural gas is an important fuel in Finland for district heating and the related electricity production. During the transition phase on the path towards a carbon-neutral society, natural gas acts as a low-emission fuel in energy generation, industry and transport.

LNG

LNG is suitable for fueling heavy-duty transport

Liquefied natural gas brings the advantages of natural gas to locations outside the gas network. The liquefying process decreases the volume of gas, which enables flexible transportation and storing, both on land and sea. LNG can be utilised as an energy source in heavy industries and as a fuel for both marine and heavy-duty road transport. The use of LNG generates approximately 25% less CO2 emissions compared to heavy fuel oil.

Gasum continuously invests in the Nordic LNG market together with Skangas, an affiliated company of Gasum, and the LNG market leader in the Nordic countries. The distribution network for liquefied natural gas is also a suitable network for liquefied biogas (LBG).

Transport

Gasum is strongly committed to developing the gas infrastructure

Gasum is strongly committed to the development of natural gas vehicles (NGVs). A part of Gasum’s market development is to increase the number of NGV refueling stations in the Nordic countries. At Gasum’s filling stations, you can choose between natural gas and domestic renewable biogas. The developing network of gas filling stations also enables the use of liquified natural gas (LNG) in heavy transport.

Developing the gas infrastructure is essential to the proliferation of NGV use: a comprehensive network will enable seamless driving throughout Nordic countries. The developing infrastructure also enables the use of liquefied biogas (LBG) in heavy-duty transport.

Refuel better – choose gas

NGVs can help us achieve the traffic emissions targets of the future … today. Using natural gas as a transport fuel produces 25% less carbon dioxide emissions compared to using petrol. Biogas has virtually zero emissions, as biodegradable material binds and releases the same amount of CO2 in use. Gas also helps reduce the dust and fine particulate emissions created by traffic.

In marine transport, LNG is the purest fuel available on the market that is suitable for all types of vessels. LNG combustion does not generate any sulphur dioxide or particulate emissions, and it generates 85% less nitrogen dioxide emissions compared to heavy fuel oil. Carbon dioxide emissions are also around 25% lower. LNG meets all the emissions reduction criteria set by the European Union and the International Maritime Organisation (IMO).
